West Sea Fisheries Research Institute of NFRDI held on 21st December, 2010 a final review meeting regarding monitoring and restoration of fishing ground of Taean of the west coast, which was severely affected by Hebei Spirit oil spill in December 2007. The project has been lasted so far since 2008. In the meeting attendance were 80 people from the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, National Fisheries Research & Development Institute, Government of Taean and the local fishing community. The participants were presented on various topics like variations in fishing ground environment and fisheries resources, biological status of tidal flat and restoration of shellfish farms and had general discussions on those topics. The environment survey showed that the
average seawater oil concentration was lowered 38% from 0.18in 2008 to
0.07µg in 2010 while the oil residue in pore
water was measured at 0.25 µg, an indication that the area is
still under the oil spill affect. According to the survey on shellfish farm
restoration, new oyster spats had normal physiological conditions like growth
and gonad maturation rate. It was also emphasized that transplanting healthy
spats is critical to raise productivity and sustainability of oyster farming. As for the manila clam farming, the
mortality rate went down 38% from 22.4% in 2008 to 8.6% in 2009 and the main
cause of the mortality was surveyed to be weather factors. The survey on fisheries resources was
mostly based on catch data from 2002 to 2010 provided from the national
statistics agency and the fisheries cooperatives. According to the survey,
catches of fish and crustacean increased from 2002-2006 to 2008-2010 while
coastal ground fish stock like rock fish, flounders and webfoot octopus were
found weakened. The local government and fishing community
asked the scientists to continue their efforts for restoration of fish farming
industry and for advanced farming technology.
