The National Institute of Fisheries Science (NIFS) announced that it has developed a removal material for Scuticociliate Miamiensis avidus (hereinafter the "Scuticociliate") which causes mass-mortalities in cultured fish. The material violacein produced by the newly discovered micro-organism Massilia sp. NB-5 is found that it shows antibacterial activity on fish pathogenic and food poisoning bacteria as well as it is effective to destroy Scuticociliate. The novel microorganism Massilia sp. NB-5 and material violacein have been granted the patents, and NIFS has transferred the technology and is also preparing the industrialization of them for responding to the Scuticociliate proliferation in fish farms.
