NIFS, the first survey on the northern East Sea border areas
Author Research Cooperation Division Date 2023-06-23 Read 195

NIFS announced that it will conduct a fisheries science research on the northern East Sea border areas, from fishing limit line to the Northern Limit Line(NLL), for the first time since the division.

Recently, the catch of warm current fish species, such as yellowtail and tuna, increases, while the catch of cold current fish species including Japanese sandfish, atka mackeral, and pollack increases in the East Sea, which is the trend caused by the impact of climate change.

In order to survey the change of the marine ecosystem in the East Sea, habitat shift, and the fluctuation of cold current fisheries resources, NIFS expanded its research area to the waters near the Far North, the first gateway where the North Korea Cold Current* flows into our seas.

* North Korea Cold Current: The current, relatively low in water temperature(1-7) and salinity(33.9-34.2psu), flows from the Primorye(Primorsky) region of Russia through the East Korean Bay into the East Sea. A major environmental factor affecting the coastal environment of the East Sea.
