The West Sea Fisheries Research Institute of NIFS, on June 14, held the expert seminar for in-depth analysis of the long-term changes in the marine environment of the West Sea by climate change.

There were expert presentations under the theme of the marine environment and fisheries resources of the West Sea the long-term changes in water temperature of the West Sea and causes, the biogeochemical changes in the environment of the western coastal and offshore waters, etc.

The presenter Dr. Lim, Weol-ae, the director of Fisheries Resources and Environment Research Division, told that the surface water temperature of the West Sea had increased by 1.19on average over the recent 55 years(1968-2022).

The SNU professor Kim, Guebuem told that the nitrate concentration in the surface water of the West Sea had decreased by 0.22µM/yr in coastal areas and increased by 0.09µM/yr in offshore waters.

Nutrients are the key component of primary productivity in oceans, so the concentration ultimately can affect the amount of fisheries resources.
