Dead sardines, reborn as feed for soldier fly
Author Research Cooperation Division Date 2023-11-21 Read 133

NIFS announced that it has pushed ahead with industrialization of manufacturing technology for high-quality feed for fish farming and livestock by utilizing dead sardines. The events of mass mortality of sardines have occurred since last year.

The technology took an idea from the fact that the food source of soldier fly is organic waste (food waste) and sardines are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, protein, etc.

By clarifying the optimum added amount of dead sardines, NIFS became possible to produce the soldier fly nutritionally better than existing one.

* Optimum formula ratio: food waste 50%+ dead sardines 50%

The soldier fly feeding on sardines showed five times more content of omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) than one feeding on organic waste.
