NIFS announced that beginning December 1 it launches its scientific survey on Antarctic Toothfish (TOA) in the area of 88.1 and 88.3 trench, managed by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living resources (CCAMLR)*.

*CCAMLR was established by international convention in 1982 with the objective of conserving Antarctic marine life. It is an international commission (intergovernmental organization) with 27 Members, including Korea, New Zealand, US, UK, Japan, China, etc.

After completing its survey on TOA in the area of 88.1, NIFS plans to conduct the survey in the area of 88.3 around February 2024.

Particularly, the 88.3 trench is where the amount of resources were rarely estimated due to insufficient scientific data on TOA and only Korea has conducted its research in the trench since 2016. Korea established the joint research team with Ukraine in 2018 and has continued the scientific research.
