MOF: Shellfish toxins, uninvited guests in winter and spring
Author Research Cooperation Division Date 2024-01-02 Read 125

To manage the occurrence of shellfish toxins in Southern Sea between winter to spring in advance, MOF establishes a plan for the survey of shellfish toxins safety 2024 effective January this year.

Shellfish toxins are the toxins accumulated in tunicates including clams, sea squirts, styela clava, etc. Consumption of the contaminated shellfish can cause paralytic, diarrhetic, and neurotoxic symptoms.

In response to that, MOF establishes the plan every year, monitoring the shellfish growing area under the plan. In 2024, it plans to increase the number of stations from 118 to 120 (Ansan city and Hwaseong city added), and closely monitor the area more than once a week in March and June, when shellfish toxins spread in earnest.

The occurrence status will be posted instantly on the official website of Food Safety Korea ( http://www.foodsafetykorea.go.kr) and NIFS (https:www.nifs.go.kr), and through text messages to fishermen.
