The first move of the new President: Visiting fisheries site
Author Research Cooperation Division Date 2024-01-30 Read 136

On January 29, the 42nd president of NIFS CHOI Yong-seok was inaugurated.

As the first move of his official task, the new president visited the cage farms in Tongyeong and Geoje, the Oyster Hanging Fisheries Cooperatives, and oyster processing plants to inspect the preparation for low water temperature and listened to the difficulties from the site.

The coastal water temperature of this winter was similar to or a little bit higher than average temperature. As low water temperature, however, occurred in coastal areas and basins of the West and South Sea due to the impact of recent strong wave of winter, the President visited the cage farms rearing fish vulnerable to low water temperature, including filefish, to check the preparation for low water temperature.

At the same time, the President inspected the response system of NIFS low water temperature control units. NIFS operates the low water temperature control units, consisting of water temperature forecast unit and damage response unit (on-site team/ emergency team), to minimize the damage to fish farmers.

The unit preemptively responses to the fisheries disasters by issuing low water temperature warning, providing real-time water temperature data, conducting on-site inspection along with local governments and aquaculture groups, and providing educations on customized management tips for each type of fish farms.
