NIFS hosted a fisheries site meeting in Yeosu, Jeonnam

The South Sea Fisheries Research Institute of NIFS announced that it hosted an on-site fisheries meeting for the pending issues with Yeosu federation of Korean fisheries management in Yeosu, Jeollanam-do Province on March 7, 2024. Yeosu recently has been experiencing repeated damages to floating fish cages such as rockfish, sea bream, etc. over the time of high and low water temperature under the impact of climate change. 

* Status of aquaculture damage in Yeosu: KRW 110 million (‘17), KRW 5.47 billion (‘18), KRW 70 million (‘22), KRW 16.75 billion (‘23)

In the conference, the participants shared research outcomes, including a facet of environmental changes in coastal fishing ground of Gamangman Gulf, Yeosu countermeasures for the time playing out fisheries disasters ▲ current status for pursuing research on the application of rockfish formulated feed to the field, etc. 

In addition, they discussed how to minimize the natural disasters and promote the utilization of formulated feed, etc. 

Fishermen also suggested several things, such as securing culture grounds for winter and summer, conducting research to improve existing aquaculture methods, developing varieties such as ones tolerant to the environment, improving disaster damage surveys, and strengthening monitoring of hypoxic water mass in Gamangman Gulf.
