NIFS said it has been operating customized consulting services per fishing village for productivity improvement in community fishing grounds of Jeju Island. Since 2013, the Subtropical Fisheries Research Institute of NIFS has monitored the changes in marine ecosystem of four community fishing grounds under the climate change. The four fishing grounds in Jeju Island are Sinheung-ri (eastern area), Hansu-ri (western area), Sagye-ri (southern area), Bukchon-ri (northern area). This time the Research Institute conducted a comprehensive analysis based on the data of 10-year resources research on and fishing status of the four areas. Compared to 10 years ago, double-digit declines were seen in the yields of major species*, including sea cucumber, abalone, fusiforme, agar, etc. (64%), and in the value of production** (21%) *‘13 7,435 tons → ‘22 2,693 tons **‘13 KRW 23.710 billion → ‘22 KRW 18.679 billion Whereas, the biomass of subtropical coralline algae and scleractinia, which disturb the inhabitation of major income species, increased every year. Against this backdrop, the Research Institute operated its customized consulting at two areas (Hansu-ri, Sagye-ri) last year, and two more areas (Bukchon-ri, Sinheung-ri) are going to be added to the consulting service in March or April of this year. Also, the Institute is going to suggest measures for effective resources management: variety selection for seed release fit for the respective fishing ground conditions; efforts to establish autonomous community fishing grounds; introduction of closed year for fishing grounds in which major sepcies are collected, etc.
