NIFS announced that it established an expert consultative council for the improvement of fisheries disaster prediction, consisting of domestic public-private-academic specialists in ocean prediction, and took its first step by hosting the Kick-Off Meeting on Thursday, March 28, 2024.

The accelerated climate change caused high and low water temperature in summer and in winter for each, and massive occurrence of harmful marine organisms, which escalates the economic damage to fisheries industry.

In the summer of 2023, high water temperature alone cost aquatic organisms KRW 43.8 billion. As such, abnormal climate has been causing radical variations in oceans and climate along with strong and frequent occurrence pattern.

Against the backdrop, NIFS rolls its sleeve up to improve the accuracy of prediction models, which are the grounds for preemptive response to marine disasters and effective warning issuance.

Centering NIFS, the consultative council involves universities, government agencies, and private companies such as the Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology, KIOST; the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency, KHOA; the National Institute of Meteorological Sciences, NIMS; Seoul National Univerisy; CHONNAM National University; and Pukyong National University.

In addition, NIFS has a plan to release a report on the achievement of council operation until the end of the year.
