NIFS announced that it is going to host the oceans and fisheries disasters R&D forum engaged by around 100 people from fishing communities, local governments, academic sectors, etc. under the theme of 'measures for minimizing the fisheries damage caused by climate change' at the Busan Port International Exhibition & Convention Center, BPEX in May 7 (Tuesday).

Since 2013, NIFS has hosted the forum every year with the aim of drawing up systematic and scientific measures for political support and cooperation to minimize the damage from fisheries disasters, including abnormal water temperature, hypoxia, red tide, jellyfish, etc.

In 2024, the forum will have time for presentations on research achievement and panel discussion to effectively respond to fisheries disasters*, which have been increasing due to the frequent abnormal climate under climate change.

- Continuous damage to fish and shellfish by high water temperature, hypoxia, and extreme rain (KRW 271.8 billion over 10 years from 2014 to 2023)

- Increasing frequency of compound disasters, such as increasing toxic jellyfish (10 species to 16 species including unrecorded ones), early occurrence of shellfish poisons (March-April to January-February) caused by abnormal water temperature
