Korean seas′ ocean warming: Much worse than the global level
Author Research Cooperation Division Date 2024-07-12 Read 36

According to NIFS, Korean seas' ocean warming has become more aggravated in recent 50 years when compared to that of the past 50 years, and also much higher than the global average one.

That was the result confirmed by the comprehensive ocean observation data across the whole sea areas of Korea - conducted bimonthly every year for around 60 years from 1960s to present - and the digitally restored 100,000 ocean observation data from 1923 to 1964 by NIFS.

The people can have access to the data on NIFS official website or the Korea Oceanographic Data Center.

In off the coast of Busan, where the observation data is most abundant, NIFS could confirm a surge in surface water temperature in winter and summer starting 1970s by separately analyzing the 10-year variations of surface water temperature in both seasons from the 1920s to the 2020s.

In addition, the rising trend of surface water temperature in Korean seas since 1970s is about two times and four times higher each in winter and summer than the global average. As such, the trend of ocean warming in Korean seas has been worsened recently.
