Preparing for the next 100 years of seaweed culture research

NIFS said it hosted the 100th modern and contemporary seaweed culture research symposiumat the Jeollanam-do Office on July 12 (Fri). 

The symposium was held to mark the 100th anniversary of seaweed culture research as well as the 20th anniversary of establishment of Seaweed Research Institute, NIFS. 

The Seaweed Research Institute is the only domestic research institute specialized in seaweed, celebrating the 20th anniversary of its establishment in 2004. 

The history of seaweed culture research goes all the way back to the 1924, Fisheries Experiment Station in Jeonnam, and this year commemorates its 100th anniversary. 

The symposium was jointly organized by NIFS, Jeollanamdo Province and the Korean Society of Phycology, and was proceeded in the following order: expert subject presentation and roundtable discussion.  Around 100 people from industry-academia-government-institute related to seaweed participated in the event.

· 100-year history, challenge, and future vision of seaweed culture research in Korea

· Status of the Marine Forest Project and strategic plans for the future

· Status of laver industry and challenges for sustainability

 Roundtable discussion

· Reflecting on the cherished 100-year past of seaweed culture research; laver exports surpassing KRW one trillion, No.1 in the global market share, etc.

· New directions and roles of seaweed culture research for another 100 years
