NIFS announced its establishment of smart aquaculture test bed (three sets for two centers) for the industrialization of smart aquaculture techniques.

The test bed is a platform for smart aquaculture R&D, including the development of advanced aquaculture techniques, the verification of smart aquaculture techniques, etc.

Over the past 3 years since 2022, NIFS had established one set of smart aquaculture test bed for onshore freshwater at the Advanced Aquaculture Research Center (Jinhae) and two sets of smart aquaculture for onshore seawater at the Aquafeed Research Center (Pohang).

The smart aquaculture test bed is based on Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) which interworks with the ICT equipment including water quality measurement sensors, image analysis equipment, automatic feeding device, real-time monitoring system, etc.

Through the system, it is possible to collect and analyze the water quality data, energy data, image data of experimental organisms, etc. in real-time.

The Advanced Aquaculture Research Center is developing an integrated monitoring & control platform software "Aquaculturist".

It also plans to develop the technique for the prediction of water quality changes and growth of farm-bred fish by utilizing the data collected from the test bed.

In addition, the smart aquaculture equipment is utilized in developing and operating a system that measures the length of fish and analyzes the behavioral pattern through temporal image analysis, an automatic sorter that allows precise image analysis, and a smart hydraulic turbine that can save energy.
