In efforts to prevent the damages of high water temperature to the seaweed (Gim·Miyeok) culture at the early stage, NIFS projected the optimal time by region for the culture. Gim and Miyeok are seaweed cultured in the sea from autumn (Sep.) to next spring (Apr.). If the water temperature is stagnant or does not decrease since the autumn season, the young fronds (leaves) are hard to grow, having a great impact on the yields of the year. The Seaweed Research Institute of NIFS projected that the optimal time for this year's culture would be late compared to last year, based on its analysis of water temperature data over the recent 5 years (2019-2023). The time to collect seed for Gim culture - when the water temperature is under 22℃ - is projected to come first in Taean (Chungnam) in late Sep. (9.22); next in Seocheon, Gunsan, Jindo, Shinan, Haenam, Wando, and Busan in early Oct. (10.1~10.8); and lastly in Mokpo and Goheung in mid Oct. (10.9~10.14). The time for temporary transplanting of Miyeok for culture - when the water temperature is under 20℃ - is projected to come in Taean in early Oct. (10.7); Seocheon, Gunsan, Haenam, Jindo, and Wando in mid Oct. (10.15~10.18); and Mokpo, Shinan, Goheung, and Busan in late Oct. (10.20~10.22). On September 3 (Tue.), the Seaweed Research Institute held the duty council with Chungcheongnam-do fisheries resource research and development institute; Jeollabuk-do seafood safety center; and JeollaNamdo Institute of Oceans & Fisheries Science for the projection of regional optimal time for the culture, aiming for the stable production of Gim and Miyeok. As the sea surface temperature of this year is expected to be around 1℃ higher than usual, so it is highly recommended to check the real-time water temperature data provided by NIFS (www.nifs.go.kr/risa/main.risa). |
