NIFS, Lifting HWT warning & urging management of aquaculture organisms
Author Research Cooperation Division Date 2024-10-02 Read 151

While lifting high water temperature(HWT) warning to the coastal areas on October 2nd, NIFS urged the intensive management for the health recovery of aqauculture organisms, which had endured the stress of HWT in summer.

The aquaculture organisms, exposed to the prolonged HWT, need special attention to recover the weakened health attributable to their lowered metabolizing function and immunity.

To that end, it is important to provide sufficient dissolved oxygen for stable breeding environment, and to slowly increase the amount of feed with nutritional additives and immunostimulant for digestive function. Too much feed supply, however, can cause mortality in culture farms, so the feed amount should be controlled carefully.

Sorting or moving the aquaculture organisms can cause another direct or indirect stress, so it should be implemented after giving them sufficient time to take a rest. Moreover, when it comes to aquatic animal disease infection, it should be monitored closely to bring the spread under control. If the infection occurs, it should be examined immediately by the experts like aquatic animal disease inspector for the treatment and prescription.

The HWT warning of this year recorded the longest duration for 71 days (July 24-October 2) since the 2017 HWT warning.
