NIFS announced that it hosted a consultative meeting with national and provincial research institutes for the creation of fisheries resources on February 20, 2025.

In the meeting were around 50 participants from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF), the National Institute of Fisheries Science (NIFS), research institutes of local governments, the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency (FIRA), etc. They had in-depth discussions on the measures for inter-organizational cooperation while reporting the result of production and release of fisheries seeds including the plans for 2024- 2025.

In particular, they had discussions on impending issues including the measures to support experimental research on developing and diversifying region-specific aquaculture species (salmon, silver pomfret, abalone, etc.) and species in preparation for climate change, to streamline administrative processes to expand species for releasing, to share information relevant to broodstock management for the production of seed for releasing, and to forge a partnership for the continuous development of laver, accounting for the 70% of global market. They also agreed on the active cooperation between relevant agencies or organizations.

Mr Choi, Yong-seok, the president of NIFS said, "The world struggles with climate change, and Korean waters, in particular, sees the rapid progress in ocean warming." He also said, "Based on mutual cooperation and defined roles between national and provincial research institutes on fisheries resources, NIFS will do its best not only to adapt to climate change, but also to overcome the challenges in rapidly changing environments of oceans and fisheries."
